Roofers Jobs

Roofing jobs install or repair roofs that are either low slope or steep slope. Roof work is completed by first installing a layer of insulation which is followed by roofing felt that acts as a sealant. Layers are repeated until the desired amount is reached and the top layer is then glazed to dense surface. A physically demanding position, roofer work is also dangerous as workers frequently bend, stretch, and reach when working on a project.

Most workers can gain the necessary experience for roofers jobs through apprenticeship programs if they are offered by the employer. A high school education or its equivalent will be useful since basic arithmetic and mechanical drawing will be used for a roofer job. Three year apprenticeship programs will allow for inexperienced workers to train under more experienced workers and are offered through most local union management committees including 144 hours of in class instruction and 2,000 hours of on the job training.

With nearly 155,000 jobs employed in 2006, a small percentage of workers were self employed while the majority worked for roofing contractors. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is projected 14 percent increase during the 2006 to 2016 decade. This rate will be faster than the national average for all occupations with the demand stemming from the need to replace roofs since they are the fastest deteriorating part of the building.  A strenuous position, additional openings will arise from the need to replace workers that transfer to other careers or choose to exit the work force entirely
